Ammonites were marine mollusks with spiraled, chambered shells, similar in appearance to the modern nautilus. Their shells were divided into internal chambers connected by a central tube called a siphuncle, which they used to regulate buoyancy.

The outer whorled shell could be smooth or intricately ribbed, and some grew as large as a car tire, though most were much smaller.
