Agate is a uniquely banded form of chalcedony, characterized by its fine layers of varying colors and translucency. Each piece of agate is distinct, often displaying curved, concentric bands in earthy tones like brown, gray, white, red, pink, and even blue or green.
It typically forms in volcanic rock cavities, where silica-rich water deposits layers over time, resulting in the stone’s signature striations. Agate can be translucent to opaque and is often polished for decorative use.
